Want to become financial analyst or investment banker?

I am majoring in accounting, and find it very boring, so i want to go into finance. So i will be getting a minor in finance. I eventually want to become a financial analyst or investment banker, and was wondering what math courses to take to prepare for that. i already have take business statistics and business calculus, should i take more math courses. should i take 3 semesters of calculus and linear algebra and a calculus based statistics course, will these courses help me at all, and are they useful for a career as a financial analyst or investment banker. And if you think i should other math courses please let me know.

You seem to be operating under the impression that your career will be defined by such-&-such pages taken from a hymnal devoted to math. It doesn’t work that way at all. You sound like an accountant! Be careful, it might be your undoing. LOL

Instead of imbibing on so many courses designed to explain and possibly justify things of an historical nature, why don’t you get yourself a part time job with a stock broker? You want to learn about investment banking or finance? Get in the trenches with the people whose money you’ll one day help manage. Even if you’re not more than an observer as you sweep floors, you’ll at least have opportunity to hobnob with professionals actually performing tasks relative to your career-in-planning.

There are innumerable opportunities out there for finance people…from backroom analysis to background checks on applicants for various situations to credit worthiness verifications to countless investment vehicle validations…you name it, it’s got opportunity spelled all over it.

An investment bank has to have the most up-to-date information at any time, or the business is at risk. To do this the IT department has to deal weigh inherent volatility in the markets that can cause the volume of transactions going through the back office to suddenly explode and with every day calculations that are so computationally large there is not enough resource to perform them throughout the day. The options are either to over provisioning resources or accept that the team are not working with the latest information. Neither is acceptable

What to do to prepare to become an Investment Banker?

I am in still in high school and i am interested in investment banking. I just wanted to know what i should be taking to prepare to become an investment banker. And are there different jobs within investment banking?

Investment banking requires a minimum of a college degree (in finance, acctg, mathematics, economics) and most employers prefer an MBA and/or JD. There is a wide assortment of jobs in investment banking, including (but not limited to) risk, sales, research, structuring, trading, M&A, equity, LBO and such. Capital markets are complex and subject to regulatory oversight. By the time you are actually educated sufficiently, the laws will have changed. Most people think it’s a ‘get rich quick’ business but in fact, it’s like wanting to be an actor: there are a zillion actors for every star. You pay a lot of dues, work long hours (60 – 80 hrs a wk) and have to love what you do. Otherwise, you will not have any measure of success.

Would being an investment banker in a bad economy (like now) be bad? Would it be a bad job to have right now?

No, because you’d basically be working for companies that need you to sell stocks and bonds for them. So now, it wouldn’t be bad. Good luck.

90 seconds at 9am: ‘Fabulous Fab’ hung out to dry; Crafar fights eviction; UK mayhem warning

Bernard Hickey details the key news overnight in 90 seconds at 9am in association with BNZ, including news that Goldman Sachs look to have hung Fabrice Tourre out to dry.

The investment banker who called himself ‘Fabulous Fab’ was at the centre of the Abacus CDO deal that triggered SEC allegations of fraud against Goldman Sachs. Fabulous Fab is now on holiday and Goldman Sachs has said that it will not condone the actions of one banker if customers were misled. Tourre’s accreditation with British authorities has been withdrawn.

Meanwhile, Apple has reported a 90% rise in profits and is now worth more than Google. It is the third most valuable US company behind Exxon Mobil and Microsoft.

Back in New Zealand, Allan Crafar and sons are fighting eviction from their farms, but the receivers Michael Stiassny and Brendon Gibson are also fighting back. They allege the Crafars engaged in cattle rustling and left their farms in a complete mess when receivers were called in.

Finally, the Conservatives in Britain have warned that bond markets would collapse and the IMF would have to be called in to rescue the British economy if there was a hung parliament after the May 6 election.

Considering the global financial crisis, is it safe or even still possible to become an investment banker?

I’m a high school junior, and I’ve been considering becoming an investment banker. However, in light of the economic crisis, it’s looking pretty grim for investment bankers. Is it still a wise career choice?

Investment banking will never be the same. Sure they will be around, but intense financial regulation will never allow them to become instant millionaires. If you want to be rich, then this will not be a wise choice.
