I have 4 year retail banking sales experience and want to get in on the investment side. Where should I apply

I have been an unlicensed financial specialist at Wachovia and have mortgage and real estate experience as well. I applied at UBS and Merrill Lynch and am wondering what other firms have a financial advisor development programs? I have a bachelors degree but no investment banking experience so I figured one of the big boys is a good place to get my feet wet.

Have you tried to search the internet for "financial advisor development program"? I did and there are thousands of relevant links. I would also add my city in the search if I were you. Also, asking people with similar background to you what they would do in your position can help! Good luck!

Warren Buffett says that distressed assets are a great investment in an interview with Charlie Rose. He talks about Mortgage-Backed Securities, the government bailout. He says if you buy distressed assets at distressed prices, you will make money. He also mentions his confidence in the US economy over time, and closes with his classic quote: “You want to be greedy when others are fearful, you want to be fearful when others are greedy.”

Can anyone give a me a pretty extensive list of Investment Banking firms as well as Equity Research firms that specialize in working with and covering financial services companies. I KBW does and Fox-Pitt does but can anyone give some more names please?

pretty much any decent size i bank should have a FIG unit.

as far as finding firms that specialize in it, just look at the appropriate league tables.

What college would be best for a career in investment banking and what do they offer that makes them better?

the best ones are the ones which has your favourite investment banks come in on the campus to interview soon to be graduates.

These are the so-called ‘target schools’.

I graduated from Baruch, a very good school in New York, albeit not a the same level of prestige as Columbia or NYU, but last year was made a ‘target’ school by JPMorgan.

So ask your potential schools, which investment banks come recruiting on campus.

What is the difference between Global Markets and Investment banking?

I am going to be interning at a global investment bank in London this summer and I was wondering what the main differences are between Investment banking and Global markets, thank you!

A market in this case, is a place, not necessary a phiscal one, where securities are traded. In your case this refers to platforms or markets that are large enough to have a global influence and are recognised globally. On the other hand investment banks are institutions that pool in funds from clients so as to invest them and in doing so also provide capital to business that need capital. Investment banks also help create securities for business going public, again they help business raise capital.
