What exactly do the stock quotes represent and how do they get those numbers? Look bellow for question details

For example, on a stock ticker, it says for the NASDAQ: 2539.38. What exactly does that number represent and how do they come up with that number?
What do you mean by "weighed". Also, what do the numbers represent. The amount of money, or something?

The stock quote is the average price one would pay for a share of that particular stock. The stock goes up and down based on what people will pay per share. In the case of NASDAQ, you are seeing how a composite of stock are doing. Nasdaq is technology stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a composite of big corporation stocks.

How do you use streaming stock quotes?

Is it like you see the price of the stock you want, and you can immediantly put in a limit order at that exact price?

Of course you may put in a limit order to buy the stock at the same price as the last trade, but there is no guarantee that someone will sell it to you at that price so your order may not get filled.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are getting the best price simply by entering a limit order for the same price you saw the last trade go across at. You would be better served by looking at the bid, the ask and the size. For instance, the stock may have a 5.25 bid and a 5.30 offer. The last trade may have went across at 5.30, buy you have a good chance of being able to buy the stock at 5.25. You simply enter your limit order at 5.25, look at the size of the bid, let’s say for example it was 1000 before you entered your limit order to buy 100 shares. When you enter your limit order the size will increase to 1100, and you know that there are 1000 shares to move before your order becomes next in line. Also, this example assumes a static environment, in reality the bids, offers and sizes are often changing.

Why are stock quotes usually delayed by 15 or 20 minutes?

Don’t you think that a site offering actual real time quotes would give their customer’s an extreme advantage? Even the official Dow Jones page lists quotes with a 20 minute delay.

Is this a legal issue or a technological issue?

If legal: why? What would the legal ramifications be for a real time stock quote?

If technological: why? Data can be transmitted over the internet with certainly less than a 20 minute delay. I could understand a full minute (maybe) but not 20.

If other, why?
There’s a whole lot of "I think…" and "But, I’m not sure."

I’m looking for an answer, not a guess. If you don’t know, go but someone else.

It’s neither a legal or technological issue but rather a revenue source issue. Exchanges charge fees for sites/firms to use their data and distribute real time quotes so the sites are simply passing on the costs along with a small margin for themselves of course.

I have $60 in stocks and the current stock quote for the company is $59. Do I times the 60 and 59 together and thats how much money I have?

how many SHARES of stock do you have? that is what you multiple by the current price
sounds like you might only have 1 share that you paid $60 for and is now worth $59
